Right to Confer a Doctorate and Right of Supervision according to PromVO 2019

The right to confer a doctorate is the right to supervise a doctorate up until the point at which the doctoral degree is awarded. It includes supervision, examination and grading of the PhD thesis, and approval of PhD defenses. There is a faculty-internal and a faculty-external right to confer a doctorate (PromVO 2019, § 8-10).

Professors comprise full and associate professors, assistant professors with or without tenure track, externally funded professors, and the following associated professors:

  • Professors at ETH Zurich's Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences
  • Prof. Flurin Condrau (Faculty of Medicine)
  • Prof. Ulrich Woitek (Faculty of Business, Economics, and Informatics)

The doctoral candidate must be enrolled at the latest in the last semester before the professor's retirement. Application to the Graduate School required (form (PDF, 1 MB)).

After moving to another university Yes, but only with the approval of the Vice Dean of Graduate School, and only as an external supervisor (may not chair the Doctoral Committee)
