Additional funding for PhD students in 2019

The Graduate School is pleased to offer two additional funding possibilities in 2019:

  • funds for short research travels and lodging
  • grants for copy editing and translation costs

Funds for short research travels and lodging

In 2019 funding is available for travelling and lodging within short research visits at universities or other research institutions, for archive and library searches and investigations, excavations, field trials, etc., or for participation in summer/winter schools (depending on budget reserve).

We support short stays which are of central importance for dissertation projects and with a duration of less than 14 days. Longer stays can be funded by the Graduate Campus, travels to conferences and congresses can be funded by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

A maximum of CHF 1'000.- (with the possibility to be divided over several travels) can be attributed per person, and applications can be handed in retrospectively for the entire 2019. This money is provided by the Graduate School in addition to the above mentioned existing financing of travel expenses and congress fees by the Faculty. Both funding possibilities can by applied for, but not with the same activity. A pooling within travels is however possible - e.g. congress travel (travelling costs and congress expenses): application to Faculty, and ensuing archive inquiry at congress location: application to Graduate School for additional funding

Conditions

Funding for the following expenses can be granted:

  • travelling expenses (train tickets within CH with "Halbtaxabonnement", cost-effective flights in economy, preferably economy-saver-rate), without taxi expenses
  • lodging costs: overnights with breakfast in middle-class hotels
  • summer/winter schools: participation fees without optional additional costs such as social activities
  • fees for museums, archives and libraries

There is no claim for full coverage of costs. Maximum funding will be matched pro rata if employment or PhD studies started during the course of the year. Costs of less than CHF 50.- will not be funded.
