This seminar gives students a broad overview of some classic and current anthropological research on Asia and the Middle East. It introduces students into a broad range of themes and debates through key ethnographies. This also allows to dig into some of the theoretical debates that have emerged out of the engagement with different parts of the larger region. For those who have earlier taken courses on individual areas, such as South, East, South-East, Central Asia and the Middle East, it serves to deepen and extend their knowledge. |

This course examines Asia and the Middle East from an anthropological perspective. Considering the immense diversity among peoples, cultures and political economy, detailed ethnographic study is central for understanding how broader economic, political and social transformation processes impact everyday experience and the ways in which communities in the region are enmeshed in and differently experience processes of globalization and modernization. The course will cover a range of topics, from colonial and postcolonial encounters, gender and sexuality, religion, class and ethnicity, agricultural transformation and urbanization to transnationalism and state building. |

| Allgemeine Beschreibung |
Die Vorlesung vermittelt einen Überblick über die Geschichte muslimisch geprägter Gesellschaften und Kulturen. Sie thematisiert die Quellen, auf denen die Kenntnisse beruhen, und die Methoden, mittels derer sie untersucht und interpretiert werden. Darüber hinaus wird die Sekundärliteratur zum Thema kritisch besprochen, wobei ein Fokus auf Grundfragen und aktuellen Debatten der Forschung liegt.
Die Vorlesung ist auch Teil der AOI-Modulreihe «Synergien kultureller Formationen in Text und Bild», die Indologie, Islamwissenschaft, Japanologie und Sinologie in Kooperation mit dem Museum Rietberg und anderen Museen jährlich anbieten. Die Modulreihe thematisiert auf der Grundlage textlicher und materieller Quellen synergetische Formationen in der Kultur von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart und nimmt dabei insbesondere die Themen «kulturelles Gedächtnis», «Religion» und «moderne Ideologien» in den Fokus. Mit diesem Ansatz fördert sie - über die fachlichen Grenzen hinaus - die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit selektiven Narrativen und deren Auswirkungen auf globale Herausforderungen wie Gesellschaft und Polarisierung. |

Der Fokus liegt auf der Analyse und theoretischen Reflexion der Wechselwirkungen zwischen Religionen und sozialen, politischen und historischen Transformationsprozessen und deren Bedeutung in gegenwärtigen Debatten. Die relevanten Forschungsansätze, das methodische Repertoire und diverse theoretische Ansätze werden diskutiert. |

Die Studierenden haben forschungsrelevantes Wissen über die Geschichte und Struktur des religiösen Pluralismus in Indien und die damit verbundenen sozio-politischen Aushandlungsprozesse. Sie können unterschiedliche Interpretationen sozialer, politischer und historischer Prozesse in indischen Religionen erklären sowie Beispiele für die Positionierung und Aushandlung von Religion in sozio-politischen und historischen Kontexten geben. The seminar provides students with in-depth knowledge of different government initiatives and policies in the region, and of their social, political, environmental, and economic consequences. The module focusses on rural and urban development initiatives, social welfare policies, and environmental policies, and will critically analyse their development and consequences. It will critically examine different theoretical approaches to the concept of 'development'. It will also focus on the insights that can be gained from'bottom-up' ethnographic research methodologies. |

This self-study E-reading course provides an introduction into classical and contemporary theories of religion and society in Asia and the Middle East. The course is designed for students who wish to gain insights into the entanglements of religion and society in past and present Asian and Middle Eastern societies, with an in-depth focus on topics such as contemporary religiosity, new religious movements, religion and post- colonialism, and orientalism. Participants will read theoretical texts written by authors such as Bhaba, Béteille, Eisenstadt, Randeria, Said, Shimazono, and Spivak. Based on those readings, a self-selected topic is discussed in the form of a written essay. |

Presentation and discussion of Master thesis project. Students have two primary options: a presentation with a follow-up handout, or a written excerpt or chapter from their thesis for discussion.
Option 1: Presentation and Follow-up Handout Students may choose to present an outline of their thesis, covering aspects like their research design, research questions, or the interpretation of their results. Subsequent to this presentation, they are required to provide a handout of 1200-1500 words. This handout summarises the main points of the presentation and explicates how the student plans to manage any substantial criticism or feedback received during the presentation. It will address the main criticisms, utilising additional resources such as research literature, scholarly references, and theoretical concepts if applicable, in order to demonstrate how the feedback can be integrated to enhance their thesis.
Option 2: Written Excerpt or Chapter Alternatively, students can opt to share a written excerpt or a chapter (up to 8000 words) from their thesis. This piece will serve as the discussion point with MAMES professors and fellow students. Like the first option, the goal is to gain valuable feedback that can help in refining their thesis further. |

This colloquium aims to provide students with an opportunity to present their Master thesis project in class and to develop the ability to formulate and present a relevant and feasible research question. Students will learn about how to contextualize research questions within the scholarly literature (both theoretical and regional) and evaluate the different types of evidence they might use to answer them. |

This course is designed for MA students to familiarize themselves with a variety of current debates and theoretical strands in social/cultural anthropology. To do so, we start with a discussion of key terms (explanation, understanding, concept, theory, objectivity and positionality). Additionally, we will address questions important for the social sciences in general, such as why people act the way they do. Based on this foundation, we focus on arguments and debates that are central to recent developments within the discipline. These may include themes like social change, development, worldviews, ethics, material culture, political ecology, care as well as cognitive, existential, or feminist approaches within social/cultural anthropology. The detailed discussions of the respective controversies, concepts and theoretical approaches aim to help students frame and prepare their research and data analysis. |

This seminar is an advanced course on anthropological debates and the use of different concepts and theories in social/cultural anthropology. It familiarizes students with classic theories as well as current debates to develop their own perspectives and support them when analyzing their own empirical data. The debates, concepts and theories discussed in this course are of a general nature, applicable to a range of issues in cultural and social anthropology. Through intensive reading and in- class discussion students will develop their skills in engaging with texts and debates. The course will enable students to apply specific concepts and theories to their respective research themes. |

The course offers an introduction to data analysis in the transdisciplinary field of empirical research in the programming language R. The R system of statistical computing is openly available from https://www.r-project.org and provides a simple and flexible software environment for statistical analyses and graphics. Tailored to the application of empirical research the course covers basics of functions and data formats in R, as well as the essential steps of a data analysis including data manipulation, descriptive statistics, statistical tests and graphical representations. Reflections on research methodology and transdisciplinarity will take place and critical thinking will be enhanced. |

Prognostic models to predict future events have increasingly been used across different fields, e.g. in the medical sciences (clinical prediction models, personalized medicine, prognostic models), in legal data science (predictive analytics), political sciences (scientific prediction), or related.
The derivation and validation of such models poses specific challenges, that require knowledge of distinct methodological aspects in order to develop models that are internally valid and can be generalized out-of-sample. This course covers traditional statistical as well as machine learning approaches for model development, sample size calculation, variable selection, methodological outcomes for the assessment of model performance, as well as model validation. The course encourages critical thinking regarding published prognostic models' validity across different fields of research. |

Der Grundkurs ist eine Einführung in das weite und innovative Feld der Digital Humanities und richtet sich an Studierende ohne Vorkenntnisse. Er zielt auf die systematische Vermittlung digitaler Kernkompetenzen in text- und bildbasierten Wissenschaften und deren Anwendung auf wechselnde Fragestellungen. Im Fokus stehen kulturelle Artefakte, insbesondere textuelle und visuelle Werke sowie ihre Datenmodellierung und Gestaltung im digitalen Kontext.
Der Kurs gibt eine Einführung in die Themenbereiche: Daten und Information, Datenbanken, Text- und Bildverarbeitung, Programmier- und Auszeichnungssprachen, Aufbau und Funktionalität des Webs, Digitale Editionen sowie künstliche Intelligenz und deren Ethik. Die Inhalte werden interdisziplinär und praxisorientiert vermittelt, d.h. durch das Erlernen technischer Grundlagen und die Erprobung verschiedener digitaler Methoden und Tools aus verschiedenen Disziplinen.
Der Kurs besteht aus Onlinesitzungen und Selbststudium-Bausteinen. |
