Designed to introduce students to topics and concepts of broad relevance to the study of language, literature, and culture, this module is unique in bringing together scholars from all subfields of English Studies. It is a collaborative effort based on research currently conducted at the English Department. Presenting a range of approaches and repeatedly crossing the boundaries between literary studies, linguistics, and cultural studies, the lecture series takes participants on a journey through different periods, regions, media, and genres, as well as different aspects and varieties of the English language. Its goal is to offer students up-to-date perspectives on the subject at hand while illustrating the scope and diversity of their field of studies. |

This module introduces students to the main methodological tools they need in order to carry out research projects in English Linguistics independently. These include both qualitatitive and quantitative methods of data analysis. It also introduces selected theoretical approaches of different areas of linguistics and it addresses more general questions of theory building and theoretical positioning in the academic setting. |

At the start of their internship, students will be given an introduction to the aims, organization, and current projects of the partner institution, by the person who will mentor them during the internship (or, possibly, by a more senior member of staff). Students may also be asked to read a short selection of primary and/or secondary texts to prepare for their internship. During the internship, the students will work on one or more clearly delimited projects that require advanced skills and knowledge (c.
90 hours of work), under the guidance of a member of staff at the partner institution. At the end of the internship, students will submit a short documentation of their practical work to the module coordinator at UZH, together with a timesheet signed by the contact person at the partner institution. If both the partner institution and the student agree, there can be max. one follow-up internship in a future semester. It is not possible to receive ECTS credits for more than two internships at the same partner institution. |

Students will be asked to visit one or more institutions, events, and/or sites in or near Switzerland. Prior to the trip(s), students will be given clear instructions and tasks (e.g. documenting their visit with photographs, making drawings, taking notes that will allow them to respond to specific questions, etc.). In addition, students may be asked to read some relevant secondary literature, as part of their preparation for the excursion(s). Human listeners can retrieve abstact linguistic messages from speech signals despite of the fact that there is strong variability in acoustic realisations of speech between individuals or between situations. Acquiring a language, listeners have to learn about how sounds group to syllables and syllables group to words and they can perform such decisions on speech despite of highly ambiguous cues to sounds, syllables or words. For this reason different theories of speech perception propose various solutions as to how speech can be perceived apparently effortlessly given its highly variable nature. |

Humans can recognize other individuals by their voice , rely on being recognized and recognition failure is a social misconduct that can lead to high embarrassment. Voices signal the emotional state, the fertility in females and help selecting the right mating partner. Voices are a key part of our personality and shape the trust we have in others. In this lecture series we will study the complexity of the human voice by applying a variety of technologies such as laryngography, electromagnetic articulography, ultrasound, endoscopy and myography. |

Das Modul bietet eine Einführung in die Praxis der Gegenwartsanalyse in Form einer Ringvorlesung an. Die Beiträge fokussieren auf die Jetztzeit, analysierenkulturelle Zeitphänomene oder Ereignisse aus Politik und Gesellschaft, praktizieren, was Hegel als die "Zeit in Gedanken erfasst" bezeichnet hat.
Leitfragen in dieser Zuwendung zur Gegenwart sind: Wie und mit welchen Mitteln kann Gegenwart erfasst werden? Welche Techniken und Konzepte liefern die unterschiedlichen Disziplinen für die Gegenwartsanalyse? Welche Geschichte hat sie? Die Beiträge beantworten diese Fragen exemplarisch und von den vielfältigen disziplinären Standpunkten her, die für die Kulturanalyse von Interesse sind. Dadurch eröffnen sich einerseits Perspektiven, die helfen, sichin der Gegenwart zu orientieren. Andererseits wird der Praxis der Gegenwartsanalyse ein Schauplatz gegeben, der die Studierenden dazu einlädt, selbständig diese Praxis zu wagen, nicht zuletzt sich als Intellektuelle zu positionieren. |

At the start of their internship, students will be given an introduction to theaims, organization and current projects of the partner institution by the person who will mentor them during the internship (or, possibly, by a more senior member of staff). Students may also be asked to read a short selection of primary and/or secondary texts to prepare for their internship. During the internship, the students will work on one or more clearly delimited projects that require advanced skills and knowledge (c.
90 hours of work), under the guidance of a member of staff at the partner institution. At the end of the internship, students will submit a short documentation of their practical work to the module coordinator at UZH, together with a timesheet signed by the contact person at the partner institution. If both the partner institution and the student agree, there can be max. one follow-up internship in a future semester. It is not possible to receive ECTS credits for more than two internships at the same partner institution. |

Students will be asked to visit one or more institutions, events, and/or sites in or close to Switzerland. Prior to the trip(s), students will be given clear instructions and tasks (e.g. documenting their visit with photographs, making drawings, taking notes that will allow them to respond to specific questions, etc.). In addition, students may be asked to read some relevant primary and/or secondary literature, as part of their preparation for the excursion(s). The students will have to organize the trips on their own, but they may apply to the ES Alumni Student Fund for financial support (see application guidelines at https://www.es.uzh.ch/alumnistudentfund). Toward the end of the semester, students will report back to the instructor (and, depending on the specific course context, also to their peers, other members of the English Department, and/or the general public). |

The self-study module Independent Reading: Critical Debates is designed for students who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge in a specialized field not offered by the regular curriculum. The module requires students to compile a reading list on a clearly defined topic of their choice. The list consists of a substantial number of theoretical text; it can include literary and historical texts as well. In contrast to the corresponding Ba module, this work has to be done independently for the most part. The module will conclude with a
30-minute oral exam on the agreed reading list. |

The media often reports that speech played backwards contains secret messages. Is that true? Does it really contain information relevant for speech communication or even secret messages? Scientists showed that babies can extract information from the speech signal right after they are born without even knowing anything about the linguistic system. In backward speech, such abilities may be lost. Other research showed than non-native speakers can be identified in speech even when it is played backwards. Why playing speech backwards? How is this done? And what do scientists want to demonstrate with this? In this seminar we will learn how to study speech communication using experimental techniques. Students will run their own experiments in which they will address a variety of questions. There are many things to discover but most likely not that speech played backwards contains secret messages. |

Next to containing a linguistic message, voices play an essential role in human social interaction. Humans can recognize other individuals by their voice, rely on being recognized and recognition failure is a social misconduct that can lead to high embarrassment. Voices signal the emotional state, the fertility in females and help selecting the right mating partner. Voices are a key part of our personality and shape the trust we have in others. Non-speech information in voice has traditionally be viewed as noise in the speech signal that needs to be cancelled out. Recent research, however, shows that non-speech information in voice actually enhances speech communication. |

The human voice is a highly complex instrument that produces intricate communicative signals (vocalising). Vocalising involves approximately
200 muscles working together within the vocal apparatus. Understanding how these signals are produced requires knowledge of both the anatomy and physiology of the vocal tract and larynx, as well as the role of articulatory muscles. In this course, you will explore various methods used to study voice production, including laryngography and laryngoscopy (examining vocal fold movement), electromagnetic articulography and ultrasound (tracking articulator movements), pharyngometry (analyzing vocal tract dimensions), myography (measuring muscle activity during vocalization), and respiratory tracing (monitoring breathing patterns while speaking). You will also examine how voice production relates to the acoustic signal and the communicative information it conveys and we will look at some use cases such as voice recognition. All these methods are available through the Linguistic Research Infrastructure (LiRI), with which we will collaborate closely. |

Learners of all ages need to be digitally literate to use digital media meaningfully, critically and responsibly. The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the concept of digital literacies, primarily using approaches and insights from educational research, and science and technology studies (STS). The module analyses key components of digital literacies such as reading digital texts, evaluating sources, and creating digital content. It also examines a series of case studies with the aim of illustrating the challenges and problems of implementing digital literacies in a range of educational contexts. The module also investigates broader social issues connected to digital literacies such as intersectionality (e.g. older adults and digital literacies). |

The course will provide students with a range of critical tools to read and examine aspects of popular culture including television, advertising, music videos, video games, or other popular artifacts. In this way, students will explore the ways in which popular culture shapes the cultural landscape today. On the other hand, the course also aims to develop the skills required to write academic research papers. Das Modul bietet eine Einführung in Sprache und Sprachstruktur des Niederländischen. Es werden keine Niederländischkenntnisse vorausgesetzt. Die externe und interne Sprachgeschichte sowie grammatischen Grundkenntnisse werden in einer Vorlesung vermittelt. Diese Kenntnisse werden angewandt in einer Sprachübung. Literatur und Kultur, mündliche und schriftliche Übungen sowie praktischer Grammatikunterricht bilden den Schwerpunkt dieser Übung. Im 2. Semester werden die Kenntnisse vertieft. Sprechen, Schreiben, Lesen und Hören werden intensiv geübt, anspruchsvollere Texte zu gesellschaftlichen Fragen, zur Sprache und Literatur sowie zu philologischen Problemen bilden dabei die Grundlage. Die Vor- und Nachbereitung der Vorlesung sowie der Übung umfasst das Schreiben kleinerer Texte sowie das Lesen und Verarbeiten von Literatur und das Vorbereiten von kleineren Vorträgen. Das Modul setzt sich zusammen aus einer Übung im ersten Semester und einer Vorlesung mit Übung im zweiten Semester. |

Studierende sind während ihres Studiums und beim Übergang ins Berufsleben vielfältig gefordert. In diesem interaktiven Modul lernen die Studierenden individuell und in der Gruppe Grundlagen der mentalen Gesundheit kennen sowie zentrale, positive Ressourcen zur Stärkung der eigenen mentalen Gesundheit. Die fachlichen Grundlagen werden inter- und transdisziplinär wissenschaftlich fundiert auf Basis von Erkenntnissen aus Psychologie, Medizin, Theologie und Sportwissenschaften vermittelt. Das Modul besteht aus zwei Präsenzvorlesungen jeweils am Anfang und Ende des Semesters, wöchentlichen Online-Vorlesungen, Selbststudium und zwei Präsenzworkshops (jeweils dienstagnachmittags). Die Studierenden lernen darin die theoretischen Grundlagen kennen und können diese praktisch durch Übungen, Eigenanwendung und Austausch in der Gruppe anwenden und praktische Kompetenzen für die Stärkung der mentalen Gesundheit im Studium und Beruf aufbauen. |

Lernziel ist die Aneignung der theoretischen Grundlagen, die Selbsterfahrung und der Kompetenzaufbau zum Umgang mit Belastungen und Förderung der mentalen Gesundheit im Studium und Beruf. Die wichtigsten Aspekte und Bestandteile der mentalen Gesundheit aus verschiedenen Fachperspektiven werden kennengelernt und in Bezug auf die eigene Person reflektiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf Ressourcen für die Bewältigung der Herausforderungen im Studium. Evidenzbasierte Aktivitäten zur Stärkung dieser Ressourcen und zur Steigerung des eigenen Wohlbefindens während des Studiums werden kennengelernt, ausprobiert und kritisch reflektiert. Indem Studierende ein besseres Verständnis und konkrete Handlungsstrategien im Umgang mit den Belastungen und der Förderung der Ressourcen im Studium entwickeln, soll ein nachhaltiger Kompetenzerwerb für künftige berufliche Herausforderungen entwickelt werden. |

In this module, students work on interdisciplinary projects that address challenges related to digital transformation. Under the guidance of a researcher from the Digital Society Initiative (DSI), students collaborate in interdisciplinary teams of 3-5 members. Each team member takes on defined responsibilities and contributes specific digital skills to the project.
After an initial innovation phase, each team engages in an exchange with experts from the DSI network. Depending on the project's focus, teams receive guidance on appropriate digital methods and approaches, as well as input on ethical, legal, social and other relevant considerations.
In a follow-up module (6 ECTS) in the spring semester, students have the opportunity to further develop and implement their project ideas in practice. |

Menschen mit physischen, sinnesbezogenen, kognitiven oder psychischen Beeinträchtigungen sind im Alltag mit verschiedenen Barrieren konfrontiert. Auch im universitären Kontext bestehen Barrieren für Mitarbeitende und Studierende mit einer Behinderung oder chronischen Krankheit. Das Modul beschäftigt sich mit unterschiedlichen Formen von technologischen, kulturellen und organisatorischen Barrieren im Lehr- und Lernkontext (z.B. erschwerte Zugänglichkeit von Lehrveranstaltungsunterlagen) und der Frage, wie solche Barrieren verhindert bzw. reduziert werden können sowie wie barrierefreies Lehren und Lernen möglich ist. Weiter sollen die Teilnehmenden dazu befähigt werden, um zukünftig als Accessibility Coaches für Dozierende tätig zu sein. Das Modul ist als Blendend Learning-Veranstaltung konzipiert. Es besteht aus einem asynchronen E-Learning-Kurs mit Podcasts und weiteren Lernmaterialien. Daneben werden an einzelnen Terminen Kurse vor Ort und synchrone online-Kurse angeboten. |

Das Modul setzt sich zum Ziel, (angehenden) studentischen Tutor:innen ein Bewusstsein für verschiedene Dimensionen der Barrierefreiheit in der Lehre und die Bedürfnisse von Studierenden mit Behinderung bezüglich barrierearmem Lernen und Inklusion zu vermitteln. Weiter sollen (angehende) studentische Tutor:innen dazu qualifiziert werden, um als Accessibility Coaches Dozierende der Universität Zürich bei der Implementierung barrierearmer Lehrmethoden und Materialien zu unterstützen. In diesem Zusammenhang erwerben die Teilnehmenden Kenntnisse in den folgenden Bereichen:

Wollen Sie einen Beitrag zur Bildungsgerechtigkeit in der Schweiz leisten? Unterstützen Sie als Mentor:in ein Primarschulkind dabei, besser mit den Herausforderungen in Schule und Alltag umzugehen. Dieses Modul bietet Ihnen die Möglichkeit, sich im Rahmen Ihres Studiums sozial zu engagieren und sich dabei persönlich weiterzuentwickeln.
Das Modul umfasst einen praktischen und einen theoretischen Teil:
Theoretischer Teil
Zu Beginn des Semesters findet eine Blockveranstaltung statt, gefolgt von vier weiteren Lehrveranstaltungen, die sich über zwei Semester erstrecken. Abhängig vom Programm finden bis zu sechs Coaching-Treffen statt. Während des Moduls werden Sie durch die Praxispartner begleitet und gecoacht.
Praktischer Teil
Sie treffen sich mindestens 30 Mal (jeweils 1-2 Stunden) wöchentlich mit dem Ihnen zugeteilten Primarschulkind. Diese Treffen dokumentieren Sie in einem Online-Tagebuch. |

Dieses Modul ist im Bereich des Service Learning anzusiedeln. Das bedeutet, dass gesellschaftliches Engagement mit fachlichem Lernen verbunden wird und ein Lernen durch Engagement stattfindet. Die vermittelten Kompetenzen werden durch das erbrachte soziale Engagement angewendet und vertieft. Das Modul und die Lernziele sind entsprechend praxisnah und handlungsorientiert:
- Förderung der sozialen Kompetenzen: Verständnis und Empathie, Kommunikations- und Beratungskompetenz, interkulturelle Sensibilität, Problemlösestrategien, konstruktives Konfliktverhalten, Beziehungsgestaltung

The course offers an introduction to data analysis in the transdisciplinary field of empirical research in the programming language R. The R system of statistical computing is openly available from https://www.r-project.org and provides a simple and flexible software environment for statistical analyses and graphics. Tailored to the application of empirical research the course covers basics of functions and data formats in R, as well as the essential steps of a data analysis including data manipulation, descriptive statistics, statistical tests and graphical representations. Reflections on research methodology and transdisciplinarity will take place and critical thinking will be enhanced. |

Prognostic models to predict future events have increasingly been used across different fields, e.g. in the medical sciences (clinical prediction models, personalized medicine, prognostic models), in legal data science (predictive analytics), political sciences (scientific prediction), or related.
The derivation and validation of such models poses specific challenges, that require knowledge of distinct methodological aspects in order to develop models that are internally valid and can be generalized out-of-sample. This course covers traditional statistical as well as machine learning approaches for model development, sample size calculation, variable selection, methodological outcomes for the assessment of model performance, as well as model validation. The course encourages critical thinking regarding published prognostic models' validity across different fields of research. |

Der Grundkurs ist eine Einführung in das weite und innovative Feld der Digital Humanities und richtet sich an Studierende ohne Vorkenntnisse. Er zielt auf die systematische Vermittlung digitaler Kernkompetenzen in text- und bildbasierten Wissenschaften und deren Anwendung auf wechselnde Fragestellungen. Im Fokus stehen kulturelle Artefakte, insbesondere textuelle und visuelle Werke sowie ihre Datenmodellierung und Gestaltung im digitalen Kontext.
Der Kurs gibt eine Einführung in die Themenbereiche: Daten und Information, Datenbanken, Text- und Bildverarbeitung, Programmier- und Auszeichnungssprachen, Aufbau und Funktionalität des Webs, Digitale Editionen sowie künstliche Intelligenz und deren Ethik. Die Inhalte werden interdisziplinär und praxisorientiert vermittelt, d.h. durch das Erlernen technischer Grundlagen und die Erprobung verschiedener digitaler Methoden und Tools aus verschiedenen Disziplinen.
Der Kurs besteht aus Onlinesitzungen und Selbststudium-Bausteinen. |

Students who have spent six or more weeks within one year and with max. one interruption (i.e. min.
42 days) in the same particular Anglophone region (region = usually not a whole country) compile a research-based report consisting of two parts: (1) a short account of their stay abroad in the form of a report that goes beyond a mere narrative (i.e. which includes some meta-level reflection on the experience); (2) an in-depth analysis of either linguistic or literary data in the context of the region in question that shows the student's close familiarity with current research on a specific aspect of that region. The analysis is concerned with either a distinctive linguistic feature occurring in the particular region or an anglophone literary work which displays a strong connection to that region. |

This online course is designed for beginners who are curious about how to analyze and make sense of large amounts of text data, especially in the field of health research. No previous knowledge in text analysis is required-just an interest in learning new ways to work with data.
In this course, students will explore how to uncover hidden topics in text in data-driven fashion (like finding themes in health articles) using a technique called topic modeling. They will also learn how to create simple tools (called classifiers) that can automatically sort and categorize text into different groups. The course will cover some basic ideas from natural language processing (NLP), which is the engine behind e.g. chatbots and search engines. Throughout the course, students will work with real examples from health research, but are also welcome to bring their own data if they have it. |
