This module introduces students to the main methodological tools they need in order to carry out research projects in English Linguistics independently. These include both qualitatitive and quantitative methods of data analysis. It also introduces selected theoretical approaches of different areas of linguistics and it addresses more general questions of theory building and theoretical positioning in the academic setting. |

Through the discus-sion of selected theoretical texts, the course aims to clarify key concepts, trace the important critical tropes, and examine how these texts construct and present their arguments. |

Prior to the trip(s), students will be given clear instructions and tasks (e.g. documenting their visit with photographs, making drawings, taking notes that will allow them to respond to specific questions, etc.). In addition, students may be asked to read some relevant primary and/or secondary literature, as part of their preparation for the excursion(s). At the start of their internship, students will be given an introduction to the aims, organization, and current projects of the partner institution, by the person who will mentor them during the internship (or, possibly, by a more senior member of staff). Students may also be asked to read a short selection of primary and/or secondary texts to prepare for their internship. During the internship, the students will work on one or more clearly delimited projects that require advanced skills and knowledge (c.
90 hours of work), under the guidance of a member of staff at the partner institution. At the end of the internship, students will submit a short documentation of their practical work to the module coordinator at UZH, together with a timesheet signed by the contact person at the partner institution. If both the partner institution and the student agree, there can be max. one follow-up internship in a future semester. It is not possible to receive ECTS credits for more than two internships at the same partner institution. |

Human listeners can retrieve abstact linguistic messages from speech signals despite of the fact that there is strong variability in acoustic realisations of speech between individuals or between situations. Acquiring a language, listeners have to learn about how sounds group to syllables and syllables group to words and they can perform such decisions on speech despite of highly ambiguous cues to sounds, syllables or words. For this reason different theories of speech perception propose various solutions as to how speech can be perceived apparently effortlessly given its highly variable nature. |

Humans can recognize other individuals by their voice , rely on being recognized and recognition failure is a social misconduct that can lead to high embarrassment. Voices signal the emotional state, the fertility in females and help selecting the right mating partner. Voices are a key part of our personality and shape the trust we have in others. In this lecture series we will study the complexity of the human voice by applying a variety of technologies such as laryngography, electromagnetic articulography, ultrasound, endoscopy and myography. |

Das Modul bietet eine Einführung in die Praxis der Gegenwartsanalyse in Form einer Ringvorlesung an. Die Beiträge fokussieren auf die Jetztzeit, analysierenkulturelle Zeitphänomene oder Ereignisse aus Politik und Gesellschaft, praktizieren, was Hegel als die "Zeit in Gedanken erfasst" bezeichnet hat.
Leitfragen in dieser Zuwendung zur Gegenwart sind: Wie und mit welchen Mitteln kann Gegenwart erfasst werden? Welche Techniken und Konzepte liefern die unterschiedlichen Disziplinen für die Gegenwartsanalyse? Welche Geschichte hat sie? Die Beiträge beantworten diese Fragen exemplarisch und von den vielfältigen disziplinären Standpunkten her, die für die Kulturanalyse von Interesse sind. Dadurch eröffnen sich einerseits Perspektiven, die helfen, sichin der Gegenwart zu orientieren. Andererseits wird der Praxis der Gegenwartsanalyse ein Schauplatz gegeben, der die Studierenden dazu einlädt, selbständig diese Praxis zu wagen, nicht zuletzt sich als Intellektuelle zu positionieren. |

Designed to introduce students to topics and concepts of broad relevance to the study of language, literature, and culture, this module is unique in bringing together scholars from all subfields of English Studies. It is a collaborative effort based on research currently conducted at the English Department. Presenting a range of approaches and repeatedly crossing the boundaries between literary studies, linguistics, and cultural studies, the lecture series takes participants on a journey through different periods, regions, media, and genres, as well as different aspects and varieties of the English language. Its goal is to offer students up-to-date perspectives on the subject at hand while illustrating the scope and diversity of their field of studies. |

At the start of their internship, students will be given an introduction to theaims, organization and current projects of the partner institution by the person who will mentor them during the internship (or, possibly, by a more senior member of staff). Students may also be asked to read a short selection of primary and/or secondary texts to prepare for their internship. During the internship, the students will work on one or more clearly delimited projects that require advanced skills and knowledge (c.
90 hours of work), under the guidance of a member of staff at the partner institution. At the end of the internship, students will submit a short documentation of their practical work to the module coordinator at UZH, together with a timesheet signed by the contact person at the partner institution. If both the partner institution and the student agree, there can be max. one follow-up internship in a future semester. It is not possible to receive ECTS credits for more than two internships at the same partner institution. |

The media often reports that speech played backwards contains secret messages. Is that true? Does it really contain information relevant for speech communication or even secret messages? Scientists showed that babies can extract information from the speech signal right after they are born without even knowing anything about the linguistic system. In backward speech, such abilities may be lost. Other research showed than non-native speakers can be identified in speech even when it is played backwards. Why playing speech backwards? How is this done? And what do scientists want to demonstrate with this? In this seminar we will learn how to study speech communication using experimental techniques. Students will run their own experiments in which they will address a variety of questions. There are many things to discover but most likely not that speech played backwards contains secret messages. |

Humans can recognize other individuals by their voice, rely on being recognized and recognition failure is a social misconduct that can lead to high embarrassment. Voices signal the emotional state, the fertility in females and help selecting the right mating partner. Voices are a key part of our personality and shape the trust we have in others. Non-speech information in voice has traditionally be viewed as noise in the speech signal that needs to be cancelled out. Recent research, however, shows that non-speech information in voice actually enhances speech communication. |

The human voice is a highly complex instrument that produces intricate communicative signals (vocalising). Vocalising involves approximately
200 muscles working together within the vocal apparatus. Understanding how these signals are produced requires knowledge of both the anatomy and physiology of the vocal tract and larynx, as well as the role of articulatory muscles. In this course, you will explore various methods used to study voice production, including laryngography and laryngoscopy (examining vocal fold movement), electromagnetic articulography and ultrasound (tracking articulator movements), pharyngometry (analyzing vocal tract dimensions), myography (measuring muscle activity during vocalization), and respiratory tracing (monitoring breathing patterns while speaking). You will also examine how voice production relates to the acoustic signal and the communicative information it conveys and we will look at some use cases such as voice recognition. All these methods are available through the Linguistic Research Infrastructure (LiRI), with which we will collaborate closely. |

Digital literacies have become key competences that are central to the skill set that 21st-century information technology requires. Learners of all ages need to be digitally literate to use digital media meaningfully, critically and responsibly. The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the concept of digital literacies, primarily using approaches and insights from educational research, and science and technology studies (STS). The module analyses key components of digital literacies such as reading digital texts, evaluating sources, and creating digital content. It also examines a series of case studies with the aim of illustrating the challenges and problems of implementing digital literacies in a range of educational contexts. The module also investigates broader social issues connected to digital literacies such as intersectionality (e.g. older adults and digital literacies). |

Die externe und interne Sprachgeschichte sowie grammatischen Grundkenntnisse werden in einer Vorlesung vermittelt. Diese Kenntnisse werden angewandt in einer Sprachübung. Literatur und Kultur, mündliche und schriftliche Übungen sowie praktischer Grammatikunterricht bilden den Schwerpunkt dieser Übung. Im 2. Semester werden die Kenntnisse vertieft. Sprechen, Schreiben, Lesen und Hören werden intensiv geübt, anspruchsvollere Texte zu gesellschaftlichen Fragen, zur Sprache und Literatur sowie zu philologischen Problemen bilden dabei die Grundlage. Die Vor- und Nachbereitung der Vorlesung sowie der Übung umfasst das Schreiben kleinerer Texte sowie das Lesen und Verarbeiten von Literatur und das Vorbereiten von kleineren Vorträgen. Das Modul setzt sich zusammen aus einer Übung im ersten Semester und einer Vorlesung mit Übung im zweiten Semester. |

Parallel zum Sprach- und Lektüreunterricht werden wichtige Aspekte der römischen und griechischen Kultur behandelt.
Die sprachlichen Kenntnisse entsprechen (in einer für die Alten Sprachen modifizierten Skala) A2/B1 (gesicherte Lateinkenntnisse).

42 days) in the same particular Anglophone region (region = usually not a whole country) compile a research-based report consisting of two parts: (1) a short account of their stay abroad in the form of a report that goes beyond a mere narrative (i.e. which includes some meta-level reflection on the experience); (2) an in-depth analysis of either linguistic or literary data in the context of the region in question that shows the student's close familiarity with current research on a specific aspect of that region. The analysis is concerned with either a distinctive linguistic feature occurring in the particular region or an anglophone literary work which displays a strong connection to that region. |

This module is designed for students who had to apply study-related knowledge and skills for a project that they themselves planned and implemented (or at the very least contributed to). It provides a framework to critically reflect upon their experience and demonstrate which theoretical and methodological implications can be deduced from their project work. |

Students are able to: (a) transfer the skills and/or knowledge aquired in their subject and discipline to another field not necessarily related to the university; (b) critically reflect on how a particular field of academic knowledge and/or theoretical or methodological framework pertains to areas outside of the disciplinary boundaries of their subject. |

| Allgemeine Beschreibung |
Students are to agree on their topic with their supervisor in a timely manner. Further details pertaining to requirements specific to the respective field in which the student has chosen to write the thesis should be discussed with them. Students are able to: (a) devise, plan, and conduct an independent research project using appropriate theoretical and methodological approaches; (b) solicit appropriate feedback; (c) present their own research in C2-level academic prose, which applies the conventions of academic writing in English. |

The Master thesis shows evidence of the ability to work independently on an academic project of a suitable level within the stipulated time limit, and to present this appropriately. |
