Das Modul bietet eine Einführung in die Praxis der Gegenwartsanalyse in Form einer Ringvorlesung an. Die Beiträge fokussieren auf die Jetztzeit, analysierenkulturelle Zeitphänomene oder Ereignisse aus Politik und Gesellschaft, praktizieren, was Hegel als die "Zeit in Gedanken erfasst" bezeichnet hat.
Leitfragen in dieser Zuwendung zur Gegenwart sind: Wie und mit welchen Mitteln kann Gegenwart erfasst werden? Welche Techniken und Konzepte liefern die unterschiedlichen Disziplinen für die Gegenwartsanalyse? Welche Geschichte hat sie? Die Beiträge beantworten diese Fragen exemplarisch und von den vielfältigen disziplinären Standpunkten her, die für die Kulturanalyse von Interesse sind. Dadurch eröffnen sich einerseits Perspektiven, die helfen, sichin der Gegenwart zu orientieren. Andererseits wird der Praxis der Gegenwartsanalyse ein Schauplatz gegeben, der die Studierenden dazu einlädt, selbständig diese Praxis zu wagen, nicht zuletzt sich als Intellektuelle zu positionieren. |

General concepts and findings will be illustrated with a range ofexamples, with the aim of demonstrating the relevance and usefulness of contemporary research for students' own work as literary scholars. |

Designed to introduce students to topics and concepts of broad relevance to the study of language, literature, and culture, this module is unique in bringing together scholars from all subfields of English Studies. It is a collaborative effort based on research currently conducted at the English Department. Presenting a range of approaches and repeatedly crossing the boundaries between literary studies, linguistics, and cultural studies, the lecture series takes participants on a journey through different periods, regions, media, and genres, as well as different aspects and varieties of the English language. Its goal is to offer students up-to-date perspectives on the subject at hand while illustrating the scope and diversity of their field of studies. |

At the start of their internship, students will be given an introduction to theaims, organization and current projects of the partner institution by the person who will mentor them during the internship (or, possibly, by a more senior member of staff). Students may also be asked to read a short selection of primary and/or secondary texts to prepare for their internship. During the internship, the students will work on one or more clearly delimited projects that require advanced skills and knowledge (c.
90 hours of work), under the guidance of a member of staff at the partner institution. At the end of the internship, students will submit a short documentation of their practical work to the module coordinator at UZH, together with a timesheet signed by the contact person at the partner institution. If both the partner institution and the student agree, there can be max. one follow-up internship in a future semester. It is not possible to receive ECTS credits for more than two internships at the same partner institution. |

The self-study module Independent Reading: Critical Debates is designed for students who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge in a specialized field not offered by the regular curriculum. The module requires students to compile a reading list on a clearly defined topic of their choice. The list consists of a substantial number of theoretical text; it can include literary and historical texts as well. In contrast to the corresponding Ba module, this work has to be done independently for the most part. The module will conclude with a
30-minute oral exam on the agreed reading list. |

The module also aims to develop key academic writing skills with a particular focus on structuring arguments and supporting them with robust media analysis and authoritative elaboration. |

Digital literacies have become key competences that are central to the skill set that 21st-century information technology requires. Learners of all ages need to be digitally literate to use digital media meaningfully, critically and responsibly. The aim of this module is to introduce learners to the concept of digital literacies, primarily using approaches and insights from educational research, and science and technology studies (STS). The module analyses key components of digital literacies such as reading digital texts, evaluating sources, and creating digital content. It also examines a series of case studies with the aim of illustrating the challenges and problems of implementing digital literacies in a range of educational contexts. The module also investigates broader social issues connected to digital literacies such as intersectionality (e.g. older adults and digital literacies). |

The aim of this course is twofold. On the one hand, the course is designed to introduce students to a broad range of cultural theories with a view to analyzing popular cultural artifacts such as media products and/or contemporary phenomena. The course will provide students with a range of critical tools to read and examine aspects of popular culture including television, advertising, music videos, video games, or other popular artifacts. In this way, students will explore the ways in which popular culture shapes the cultural landscape today. On the other hand, the course also aims to develop the skills required to write academic research papers. The course will focus on essential aspects of advanced academic writing skills such as writing abstracts, introductions, research overviews, methodology sections, and conclusions. |

This one-semester module focuses on the language skills required by teachers of English in the classroom. Particular attention is paid to issues such as error analysis and common sources of error, pedagogical grammar and contrastive issues affecting German-speaking learners, as well as methods for correcting learner English in both written and spoken forms. The aim is to reflect on language issues affecting English teachers and learners, and to equip trainee teachers with both language for the classroom and the meta-language for reflecting on their own teaching practice. |

Conceived as an intensive reading course, this seminar provides students with the theoretical and methodo-logical training necessary for the type of research they will undertake at the Master level. Through the discus-sion of selected theoretical texts, the course aims to clarify key concepts, trace the important critical tropes, and examine how these texts construct and present their arguments. |
