This course introduces MA students to the key concepts and theoretical debates of the Specialized Master «Global Futures: Development, Sustainability, Social Justice». Building on insights from social and cultural anthropology, geography and area studies, we will explore the principal theoretical frameworks, key research themes, and ongoing debates related to the global entanglements, everyday experiences and future(s) of development, sustainability and social justice. During the course students will discuss debates about these key concepts with lecturers from anthropology, geography, and area studies. Along the way, they will learn various genres of academic writing and argumentation (writing, ethnography, theory / debate). Students will practice their reading, writing, presentation and debating skills while engaging with a range of relevant materials such as academic and non-academic texts, films and podcasts. The course will equip students with a foundational theoretical vocabulary and an understanding of knowledge controversies, concepts and theoretical approaches in relevant fields of the program, helping them to frame and prepare their research and data analysis in subsequent modules. |

The course Research Methods and Design will introduce master students to the 'hows and whys' of using qualitative and quantitative researchmethods and prepare them for their upcoming fieldwork. The course covers the entire research process from the initial planning and preparation stages (generating the research problem, thinking about the research's theoretical basis, choosing a methodology, selecting a case, writing a research proposal), to collecting and analyzing data (uses of secondary data, sampling strategies, interviews, participant observation, field notes, surveys, social mapping, visual data; grounded theory, narrative and discourse analysis; transcripts, coding, using computer software), and writing up. We will look into a range of topics like ethical issues; entering, relations in and leaving the field; keeping records and getting feedback. With several assignments throughout the semester, students by the end of the course will be able to submit a research design. |

This course engages with different debates and perspectives in the study of development: What does development mean, and how can we capture it? How do people in "poorer" countries maintain their livelihoods under difficult conditions? What is done to help improve people's lives? How is humanitarian aid understood by different actors? All these questions relate to broader concerns of "development". Development, however, is a highly contested term. It used to (and sometimes still does) describe the modernisation of societies according to the model of the "West" that was assumed to be more and better developed than countries of the so- called "Global South". Nowadays, the term development and its normative connotations are discussed more critically. Employing a critical approach, this course centres around three dimensions of development: (i) development as a discourse (normative dimension), (ii) development as change and transformation (analytical dimension), and (iii) development as purposive intervention (practical dimension). The course is run as a weekly seminar, giving students the opportunity to read and discuss key texts in development studies with a range of experts from our department. Students will gain an overview of the topical breadth of the subject and learn how to think and approach development critically.
Inspired by social theories, they will learn to raise questions and to conduct analyses of development processes. Further, they will develop sensitivity towards different social realities and moralities, and be able to reflect on their own positionality in studying development. |

Die Stadt ist einer der wichtigsten Schauplätze des Wandels im 21.
Jahrhundert. Um der Diversität städtischer Erfahrungen Rechnung zu tragen, wird Wissen über urbane Veränderungen vermehrt partnerschaftlich entwickelt. Dieses Modul vertieft Kenntnisse der Stadtgeographie und Kompetenzen in qualitativen Forschungsmethoden im Rahmen von angewandten, kollaborativen Stadtforschungsprojekten. In Projektpartnerschaften mit außeruniversitären Partnerorganisationen erproben wir ein Seminarformat, das traditionelle Rollen von Forschenden und Beforschten, sowie Lehrenden und Lernenden auf den Prüfstand stellt: Dafür entwickeln wir Forschungsprojekte, in denen Studierende nicht über, sondern mit Akteur*innen der Stadt Lernen und Wissen in und über Zürich produzieren.

This module explores the relationship between politics, space, power, and the environment. Political processes today take shape in a complex geographic context; at the same time, they also impact geography, actively writing space itself. This module brings those dynamics to the fore and locates them both in blatantly politicized sites (such as conflict zones, camps, resource extraction, refugee or climate-depleted spaces, and urban and digital 'ruins'); as well as in the intimate spaces of the everyday, ordinary, ethnic and familial. Through discussions of key texts and research in political geography, the module offers alternative ways to re-think predominant concepts like territory, the state, empires, nations, borders, digital spaces, the climate, citizenship, and sovereignty - as well as our own lives - from a geographic perspective.
This module will particularly focus on critical, decolonial, indigenous, and feminist approaches to political geography - on the past's continuity and the present's impact on the future of geographically made inequalities. We will also continually engage with the theme of what it means to theorize core political-geographic concepts - such as the state, sovereignty, borders, territory, identity, refugees and citizenship - with and from the margins.
Finally, we ask about modes of knowledge production: how do we know what we know about politics and power relations? What methodologies allow us to question taken-for-granted assumptions about political geography and generate alternative and critical conceptions of the relations between geography and politics? |

Despite global efforts to stop and reverse climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing social inequality, these processes only seem to be accelerating. The urgency to address these issues has now led to a global call for 'transformative change,' but what exactly does this m and how can we make sure it is different than all the other failed solutions? To tackle these glaring contemporary issues, this course encourages students to dig deep into the structures of power that maintain the status quo and hinder meaningful transformation.
Specifically, the course provides students with critical theoretical insights into socioecological relations, the production of knowledge about these relations, and the power dynamics inherent in governing these. It focuses on key debates and critiques within the wide field of political ecology and on challenges arising from land and natural resource governance, access, and use. With these critiques in mind, the final sessions of the course focus on some of the current approaches to, and critical debates surrounding, societal transformation initiatives.
The course will be run as an intensive seminar: lectures and close reading of canonical texts will be complemented by classroom discussions and smaller exercises. The course will illustrate practical applications of theoretical concepts through case studies and offer students the option to apply course concepts in a service-learning project. The course will also guide students through the process of writing a seminar paper on a selected topic of interest related to course material. |

The seminar course GEO432.1 "Gender, Work and Space" invites students to engage in a critical debate around the inequalities encountered in today's cities. The course draws on a rich body of literature which includes feminist geography, deconstructing established binaries and categories, and Black and anti-racist scholarship. It discusses critiques of neoliberalism, capitalism and low-wage labour. Furthermore, it includes a guest lecture at the end of the semester.
Transferring the theoretical debates to practice, we have two excursions, one at the beginning of the semester. And a second one is part of the exercise course GEO432.2. During this exercise course, students work in teams of three and develop an excursion module in which the discussed phenomena can be experienced in the city of Zurich. The individual modules are then assembled for a two-day excursion, which takes place in December. |

Module GEO433 offers in-depth engagement with agriculture, food production and food consumption in our global times.
In the seminar course GEO433.1 we will read and discuss texts and engage with additional visual material with three main emphases:
- First, we focus on the ongoing transformation of agricultural value chains and the increasing power of retailers and transnational food producers.
- Second, we turn our attention to realms that are marginalized in the mainstream value chain literature, such as labor relations, dispossession of land or the destruction of nature.
- Third, we ask for possible alternatives to globalized industrial agriculture and discuss both their potential and their challenges.
Theoretically, we will seek inspiration from critical political economy and from the literature that approaches the economy from a poststructuralist perspective.
Exercise course GEO433.2 complements these discussions with a two-day field-trip. The field-trip will put students into dialogue with practitioners from NGOs and the private sector, enabling them to deepen class discussions and to make connections to their everyday life. |

They are able to critically discuss specific phenomena of globalization, commodification, and industrialization of agriculture using selected theoretical perspectives from economic geography and neighboring disciplines. They acquire an understanding of alternative ways of organizing food production and provision and their strengths and weaknesses. Engaging with empirical case-study literature and examples from practitioners, students are able to make connections to their own everyday lives. They practice crucial academic skills such as academic reading, writing, moderating, and debating. |

The event will be conducted as a lecture series by the Right Livelihood Center and the Sustainability Hub. The event always opens with an introductory presentation by a winner of the Alternative Nobel Prize. The lectures by laureates do not fall within classic academic areas but instead demonstrate impressively how knowledge is operationalized in the field. Additionally, engaging with the award winners promotes inter-, trans-, and multidisciplinary ways of thinking. This is because their achievements, for example in the areas of human rights or ecology, cannot be clearly assigned to a single field of study. The topic of sustainability is explored from various perspectives. Each evening, alongside the winners, there will be a representative from research and civil society on the podium. |

| Allgemeine Beschreibung |
Migration und Flucht zählen zu den drängendsten Themen der Gegenwart und lebensweltlichen Realität. Der interdisziplinäre Kurs "Migrations- und Fluchterfahrungen in der Schweiz" richtet sich an Studierende aller Fachrichtungen - insbesondere der Medizin, Psychologie, Pädagogik, Politik- und Rechtswissenschaften
-, die im Hinblick auf ihre spätere Berufstätigkeit Wissen und Komptenzen in Bezug auf die Themen Migration, Flucht und interkulurelle Kommunikation erwerben möchten. Der Kurs ist in mehrere Lerneinheiten gegliedert, die die Themenbereiche Gesundheit; interkulturelle Kommunikation und Ethik; Migrationsrecht, Wirtschaft und Politik; Medien und Gesellschaft; sowie Bildung und Integration abdecken.
Als Teil des Kurses absolvieren die Studierenden eineselbstorganisierte mind. achtstündige Hospitation. |

> Die Teilnehmenden verfügen über grundlegendes Wissen aus verschiedenen einschlägigen wissenschaftlichen Perspektiven zu den Themen Migration und Flucht in der Schweiz sowie interkulturelle Kommunikation. > Die Teilnehmenden erhalten Einblick in die Lebenserfahrungen von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund und Fluchterfahrung in der Schweiz und sind sensibilisiert für deren Situation (z.B. Sprachprobleme, Diskriminierung, Teilhabe, psychische Belastungen etc.). > Die Teilnehmenden erkennen und reflektieren Zuschreibungen, Vorurteile und Stereotype im Umgang mit Menschen anderer Herkunft sowie kulturelle und individuelle Prägungen bei sich und bei anderen, können diese einordnen und bei der Interaktion berücksichtigen. > Die Teilnehmenden erhalten Einblick in aktuelle Forschung an der UZH zu den Themen Migration, Flucht, Integration und interkulturelle Kommunikation. > Die Teilnehmenden lernen Möglichkeiten kennen, sich zivilgesellschaftlich in diesem Feld zu engagieren, und lernen verschiedene berufliche Möglichkeiten im Bereich Migration und Flucht kennen. |

Der Kurs bietet eine interdisziplinäre Einführung in die Arbeit mit Geographischen Informationssystemen (GIS) als vielfältig einsetzbarer Methode.
Räumliche Daten sind in fast jeder Disziplin wichtig. Sie eröffnen ein breites Spektrum an Einsatzmöglichkeiten, um räumliche Zusammenhänge zu erkennen. Welchen Nutzen hat die Arbeit mit GIS für verschiedene Fachbereiche? Welche Art von Erkenntnissen oder innovativen Fragestellungen sind mit GIS möglich? Welche Besonderheiten ergeben sich bei der Arbeit mit räumlichen Daten, und welche digitalen Werkzeuge stehen dafür zur Verfügung? Wie gelingt der Transfer von der wissenschaftlichen Fragestellung zur technischen Umsetzung, und welche grundlegenden Punkte gilt es dabei zu beachten?
Diese Aspekte werden theoretisch beleuchtet, anhand von Fallbeispielen erläutert und in selbstständigen Übungen während des Semesters vertieft. Dabei werden sowohl theoretische Konzepte als auch praktische Umsetzungskompetenzen vermittelt. |
| Lernziel |
Die Teilnehmer:innen kennen verschiedene Einsatzszenarien von GIS und können eigene Beispiele aus ihrer Disziplin skizzieren. Sie sind in der Lage, räumliche Daten selbst zu erheben oder bestehende Daten kritisch zu bewerten und wissen, worauf dabei jeweils zu achten ist.
Sie können einfache GIS-Projekte konzipieren, verschiedene Visualisierungsmethoden anwenden und deren jeweilige Vor- und Nachteile benennen. Ausserdem verstehen sie, was ein Geoinformationssystem (GIS) ist und wie es fachspezifische Methoden sinnvoll ergänzen kann. |

This introductory course on research data management (RDM) familiarizes students with important aspects and components of RDM and the data lifecycle. The course will also teach about data repositories, including how to find and cite existing data from such repositories, and about some of the legal aspects of data reuse and sharing, e.g. data licenses. After the end of this course, students are able to plan their own research data management. The introductory course is intended for bachelor students, master students and also PhD students who have little or no prior knowledge of research data management. The course takes place as a half-day on-site event with online learning components before and after the event. The online preparatory tasks need to be completed before the on-site event. |
