Writing for doctoral candidates

Writing Initiative: Writing and Finishing a Doctorate

Jerome in his study (Antonello da Messina)

Writing is the key to a successful doctorate. From dissertations to journal articles, research proposals, and abstracts, doctoral candidates face high demands. Writing sharpens thinking, encourages clarity and precision, and is part of the research process itself. However, the path is rarely straightforward – often filled with revisions, uncertainties, and occasional writer’s block. In short: from the spark of an idea to the printed word, the journey can be challenging.

Our Writing Initiative offers a variety of resources to guide and support you through this process.

Writing Courses

Our writing courses teach effective techniques to make writing smoother and more productive. Whether you are starting your dissertation, refining your final draft, or preparing a journal article, these courses offer expert guidance.

Writing Spaces

We have booked rooms for distraction-free writing sessions exclusively for doctoral candidates. At the beginning of each session, participants share their goals, then write in a focused environment, and finish with a brief reflection.

Writing Marathons

Writing marathons focus on making intensive progress and achieving quick advances in the writing project. Suitable goals are set and strategies for achieving them are discussed. Writing marathons usually take place in June/July and August/September.
