Research Stay (Long Trip)

All doctoral candidates enrolled at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (PhF) may apply to the Graduate School for funding of up to CHF 5,000 for extended research stays abroad. Research stays of two weeks or more are eligible for funding.

Application deadline and payment

1 February 2027 for research stays beginning in 2027.

The Subject Committees will decide on the allocation of funding by early March 2027. Funding will be paid out as a scholarship in April 2027.

The Subject Committees decide on applications from the subject areas assigned to them. Funding is awarded on a competitive basis and is subject to budget availability.

Report

No later than one month after completion of the research stay, a short report must be submitted to the responsible doctoral programme coordinator. The report must be accompanied by a photo or image, an overview of expenses, and the corresponding receipts.

The report and photo or image will be published in the Graduate School’s news feed. Please use only photos in which no individuals are identifiable.

Insurance

Doctoral candidates are responsible for ensuring that they have adequate travel insurance. Information on any insurance coverage provided by UZH is available here.

Early termination or cancellation

If the research stay has to be terminated early, the Graduate School must be informed immediately in writing. Any lump-sum payments already made towards living expenses must be reimbursed on a pro rata temporis basis.

If the research stay cannot take place, the Graduate School must likewise be informed immediately in writing. In this case, the full amount of funding already paid out must be reimbursed.

  3. For field research or similar: letter of support by the principal supervisor (max. 1/2 page)

  4. For air travel:  Please note that theCO₂ tax on air travel will be deducted from the grant payment. For calculations please use Atmosfair.
