Research Travel Grant
Eligibility and purpose
Doctoral students enrolled at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences may apply for a grant to cover the costs of various types of research trips. These include:
- Conferences, congresses, symposia, and workshops
- Summer / winter schools
- Research stays
- Archival / library research
- Field studies and excavations
Support is provided for travel that is central to scientific qualification.
Scope and type
The maximum grant available is CHF 1500 per person per calendar year. Multiple applications are permitted until this amount is reached.
Grants can be applied for to cover:
- Travel expenses
- Accommodation costs
- Participation fees for scientific events and supporting programs
- Usage fees for archives, museums, and libraries
For air travel, a steering tax is levied on flight-related carbon dioxide emissions. This tax will be deducted from the grant payment. *Please note that theCO2 compensation tax must be taken into account in the budget plan for flight travel.
There is no entitlement to the grant. Payments of less than CHF 50 will not be paid out. Additionally, the budget proviso applies.
Application
Grants can be applied for at the earliest three months before the trip and at the latest one month after the trip. Applications must be submitted via theonline application tool
The following restrictions apply during the turn of the year:
- Applications for trips in November and December must be submitted by 1 December.
- Applications for trips in January, February and March can be submitted from 15 January.
A decision on the application will be made within two months. This decision will be based on the budget plan, the annual maximum amount, and the principal supervisor's approval. Incorrect applications will be rejected and returned for revision with an explanation of the reasons.
Payment
The Graduate School does not correspond about payment, which is typically made within two months of the application being received.
If the trip cannot be taken, the Graduate School must be informed immediately, and the grant must be repaid in full. Minor deviations from the budget plan are permitted.
Insurance and secondment
It is the responsibility of doctoral students to obtain travel insurance. Information about insurance coverage through UZH can be found here.
Doctoral students with a position at UZH require a formal secondment, if they are absent for more than five working days. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding secondment, please contact the person responsible for human resources at your institute or department.
